Sporadic clashes between Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and Burma Army (BA) have been fierce in various locations in northern Burma after the two groups met to initiate ceasefire a few days ago, according to KIA battle field reports.
A numbers of defensive attack from KIA took place three different location in Kachin & northern Shan State of KIO control areas in the very next day after the KIA & BA officials met on June 30, 2011, aiming to prevent Burma Army’s further deployment adjacent to KIA control areas.
On July 1st, troops from KIA’s battalion 5, based in central Kachin State launched a surprised attack against Burma Army deployment nearby the area. Around twenty of Burmese soldiers were reportedly wounded and a few of them were killed.
On the next day, soldiers form KIA’s battalion 9, based in northern Shan State, set off a bomb attack a 4-wheel-drive truck which carried a group of Burmese soldiers, resulting all died on the spot.
On July 3rd, hours long skirmish had been took place in Sang Gang area of southeastern Kachin State. In this fighting soldiers from KIA’s battalion 15 and Burmese soldiers from battalion 236, 348 & 144 were engaged after BA soldiers tried to intrude the KIA control area. On the same day, Ngip Nsawp Bridge, situated along the Myitkyina-Sumpra Bum highway in northern Kachin State, was destroyed by KIA.
On July 4th, five Burmese soldiers from BA’s battalion 141 were killed by ambushed administered by soldiers from KIA’s battalion 5, seizing arms & ammunitions.
On June 30, KIA’s deputy military chief Brig-Gen Gun Maw and a group of other high-ranking KIA commanders met Col Than Aung, the Kachin State minister for border affairs, by the roadside in Laja Yan Village, Kachin State. No tangible result had reached for the ceasefire.
